    <BODY LINK="#0000ff" VLINK="#800080"> <P>US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators looking into the partial loss of pitch control experienced by an Alaska Airlines MD-82 at Fairbanks, Alaska on 5 February are checking for the effects of extreme cold on the aircraft, among other factors.</P> <P>According to the NTSB, the captain of the aircraft involved - registered N934AS - said that during its take-off roll the MD-80's nose failed to rise as he applied aft control yoke pressure. On applying an excessive amount of back pressure, the MD-80's nose did rotate slowly and the aircraft achieved the desired pitch angle for take-off.</P> <P>The captain added that once he was assured that the aircraft had achieved a positive rate of climb, he declared an in-flight emergency and continued on to the flight's originally planned destination, Anchorage.</P> <P>However, the NTSB report cites the captain as saying that during the approach to and landing at Anchorage, the aircr
