Egyptian officials have granted Palestinian Airlines permission to start a service linking El-Arish, Egypt with Jordanian capital Amman. The Palestinian carrier will operate three flights a week in each direction.

Most of the passengers will be Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, who have been unable to fly in and out of the territory since shortly after the start of the uprising against Israel last year. The Israeli authorities closed Gaza International Airport when a bus carrying staff to the facility was attacked.

Palestinians arriving at El-Arish from Amman will be taken by bus the short distance to Rafah, before crossing into the southern end of the Gaza Strip on foot.
