The wreckage of flight AH5017 has been located in Mali near the border of Burkina Faso.

The wreckage of the Boeing MD-83 aircraft “was clearly identified despite its disintegrated state,” said the office of the French President in a brief statement.

The wreckage is located near the town of Gossi, and a French military unit is being dispatched to secure the crash site.

Operating with 110 passengers, the MD-83 had departed at 01:17UTC and was due to arrive in Algiers at 05:10UTC. The flight was operated by Air Algerie, which chartered the aircaft from Swiftair.

Flightglobal's Ascend Fleets database shows the MD-83 had accumulated more than 32,000 cycles and 37,800 hours.Swiftair was operating the aircraft on a wet lease, estimated to expire in September 2014.
