Air Madagascar is ordering three ATR 72-600s on top of a pair to be leased from Irish company Elix Aviation Capital.
The carrier had disclosed earlier this year that it was renewing its fleet with the -600 version of the turboprop.
ATR has confirmed that the airline has signed a purchase agreement – which it values at $77 million – for three aircraft, to be delivered from 2017.
It has additionally received the first of the two leased aircraft from Elix with a second to be delivered in April.
“Their low operating costs will allow us to offer the most attractive air fares,” says Air Madagascar chairman Henry Rabary-Njaka. He says the aircraft have “strong reliability” and will be a “real asset” with which the airline will be able to expand its network.
Air Madagascar has two ATR 72-500s and a 42-500 in its fleet. The airline has been an ATR operator for about two decades.
