Rival narrowbody engine manufacturers CFM and IAE have both captured a share of American Airlines' order for 130 current generation A320 family aircraft.
Those aircraft were part of a massive order American placed in July of this year for 460 Airbus and Boeing aircraft that includes the re-engined A320neo and 737 Max models.
American has opted for current generation A319 and A321 variants, picking the CFM 56-5B to power the A319 and the IAE V2500 as the engine for the A321s.
Reiterating the logic behind its massive narrowbody order, American in revealing the powerplant selection stated the A320 aircraft family offer a 35% reduction in fuel cost per seat versus the MD-80 and a 12-15% reduction, respectively, compared with the 757 and 767-200.
Flightglobal's ACAS database shows American operates more than 200 MD-80s, 122 757-200s and 15 767-200ERs.
With the selection of the V2500 American becomes a new customer for IAE, which stated it was excited to be a part of the airline's fleet transformation.
CFM pointed out it has been chosen to power roughly 57% of all A320 aircraft in service or on order, and said American is one of its largest CFM56-7B customers. "We are pleased to introduce the CFM56-5B into its fleet," the company stated.
