The American Airlines Group name will replace AMR Corporation as the owner of American Airlines following the carrier's merger with US Airways.

The change will occur immediately following the close of the deal, which is expected in the third quarter, according to a stock exchange filing.

AMR was formed in 1982 as the parent of both American and its regional subsidiary American Eagle Airlines.

American and US Airways announced that they plan to merge, subject to various approvals, on 14 February.
