Lumexis is targeting cost-conscious budget carriers with the newly launched iPAX wireless-streaming embedded in-flight entertainment system.

The touchscreen in-seat monitor weighs 8.9oz (250g) and the system is intended to create ancillary revenue streams via advertising, sponsorship and onboard retail opportunities.

Customers can also opt to install a USB charging port and/or a credit card reader alongside the monitor.

The iPAX system will be ready for initial installations in the fourth quarter of this year, and "intensive discussions" are under way with a number of potential airline customers, says Lumexis vice-president of sales Jon Norris.

It is purely aimed at single-aisle operators and the idea was born of there being "no affordable option for seatback IFE", says Norris. iPAX is half the weight of an overhead system and one-third of the cost of a conventional seat-back system, he asserts.

While portable wireless IFE systems that can be streamed to passengers' personal electronic devices have been billed as an affordable option for low-cost carriers, Lumexis believes embedded solutions are better because they allow for the use of "early window content" and provide a "better experience" for the passenger.
