Malaysia Airlines passenger traffic up 4.5% in January

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has posted 4.5% growth in total passenger traffic, as measured in RPKs, for January.

Its domestic RPKs fell by 2.1% and international RPKs rose by 5.2%.

The carrier's total passenger numbers increased by 6.2% to 1.14 million. Its domestic passenger numbers rose by 1.6% to 393,000 and international passenger numbers increased by 8.8% to 747,000.

The airline's overall capacity, as measured in ASKs, grew by 4.7%. Domestic capacity went up by 13%, while international capacity rose by 3.7%.

The airline's overall passenger load factor fell by 0.2 percentage points to 73.9%. The domestic passenger load factor declined by 9.5 percentage points to 61.2% and the international passenger load factor rose by 1 percentage point to 75.5%.

On the cargo front, MAS' freight traffic in load tonne kilometres rose by 70%. MAS' cargo capacity as measured in capacity tonne kilometres went up by 72%. The airline's freight load factor dropped by 0.6 percentage points to 63.8%.
