In an effort to convince the business aviation community that its services are not just for airlines, the Flight Safety Foundation is highlighting the safety tools it offers to corporate and business jet operators.
As chairman of the FSF’s business advisory committee Peter Stein, an active corporate pilot with 30 years flying experience, is offering operators guidance from the its NBAA stand on how they can benefit from the organisation’s experience and contacts.
The FSF helps set ISBAO standards (international standards for business aircraft operations), and can assist operators in meeting them, which comforts clients, foreign aviation authorities and fixed base operators.
In areas of the world like China, the Middle East and Brazil where business aviation is expanding very quickly in an immature support environment which is struggling to meet demand, the FSF provides advice on best practice, and can also help to educate private owners that are new to business aviation and do not understand its limitations – of both humans and hardware.
Operators can provide aircraft commanders with FSF packages of science-based information to explain to demanding clients what best practice is if, for example, an un-anticipated departure delay is going to extend crew duty hours beyond what is safe.
It also has advice on changing risks, like the increasingly widespread use by clients and passengers of lithium-ion batteries in personal electronic equipment, and the introduction of such batteries to back-up power in the latest-generation aircraft.
United Nations humanitarian missions all over the world often charter aircraft for areas that are politically unstable or have poor aviation infrastructure. As a result, the FSF has led a programme to determine best practice covering all aspects of operating in these areas, from carrying out risk assessments to choosing suitable charter operators.
Meanwhile, Stein says he is working on final agenda arrangements for the 13-14 May 2015 Business Aviation Safety Summit at Weston, Florida - the 60th time the event has been held. Stein says the conference’s longevity proves FSF’s long-standing commitment to business aviation.
