Ryanair is in talks with manufacturers with a view to ordering long-haul aircraft after its board approved plans to begin transatlantic flights.
The Irish carrier would not provide details of the discussions but says it plans to operate "low-cost flights" from 12-14 European cities to 12-14 US destinations.
"European consumers want lower-cost travel to the USA, and the same for Americans coming to Europe. We see it as a logical development in the European market," Ryanair says.
The Dublin-based carrier adds that its transatlantic business plan is "dependent on attaining viable long-haul aircraft, and we estimate that's four to five years away".
