Several passengers and crew onboard a TAM Airbus A330 were injured after the aircraft hit heavy turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean yesterday, en route from Madrid to Sao Paulo Guarulhos airport, forcing it to perform an emergency landing in Fortaleza in north eastern Brazil.

The Brazilian carrier says flight JJ8065 landed safely in Fortaleza at 01:36h local time. While the airline did not reveal the number of people which have been injured during the incident, a local airport source says that "15 people have been take to hospital, some of them with broken bones. Three of them were flight attendants."

TAM says that all but two have been released from hospital during the course of the day.

The aircraft did not suffer any damage and TAM dispatched a reserve crew to fly it and the remaining passengers on to Gaurulhous yesterday.
