The higher-thrust version of the Engine Alliance GP7200, the GP7272, rated at 72,000lbs (32,650kg) will be ready for service entry by early 2013, said Mary Ellen Jones, president of the General Electric/Pratt & Whitney engine joint venture, at this week's Singapore Air Show.

With 2,000lbs extra thrust over the current version of the GP7200, this engine will enable Airbus to offer a 575 tonne payload for the A380. This will give carriers some 200nm of extra range, enabling a carrier like Emirates to operate between Dubai and Los Angeles.

Engine Alliance is now offering the higher-thrust GP7272 to customers, although none have selected it so far.
