US civil aviation regulators and Boeing officials will launch a comprehensive review of Boeing 787 critical systems "including the design manufacture and assembly" later on 11 January.

The review follows a number of high-profile incidents involving Boeing's flagship twinjet, including the 7 January battery fire on a Japan Airlines aircraft at Boston Logan airport.

Launching the probe will be US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta and Ray Conner, president and chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
