FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL'S annual listing of military accidents and incidents is as complete as possible, but it inevitably reflects varying national attitudes to the release of information on military operations. Some countries release no accident, attrition or safety-related information as a matter of policy, while others make available a great deal of data. Accident investigations for the majority of events during 1996 are not yet complete. The list, therefore, is only as information, not as a basis for statistical calculations or safety comparisons.

The information comes from a combination of Flight International's own sources and the database of Brassey's Global Military Aircraft Census (GLOBEMAC), which covers the strengths, organisation, disposition and past and future procurement planning of some 150 air forces and paramilitary air arms.
