Flight tests of the first Boeing 747-400 Special Freighter (SF) are expected to start at the end of September in Xiamen, China.

Modification work for the Boeing-led programme, which has attracted firm orders for 33 and options on 29, is being performed initially by Taikoo Aircraft Engineering (TAECO).

The first aircraft is due for delivery to launch customer Cathay Pacific in December. Cathay plans to have at least six 747-400s converted. Modifications include adding the -400F cargo door and surround structure, -400F-type main deck cargo floor beams, full main deck lining for Class E cargo, window plugs, forward and aft lower lobe air conditioning, and removal of the flightdeck door.
