Germany’s IABG has started fatigue-testing the Airbus A380 airframe at its Dresden laboratory, where it will simulate about 25 years of service life. IABG will re-create stresses and wear equivalent to 47,500 flight cycles, more than twice Airbus’s design service life target of 19,000 cycles.

The A380 needs to attain 5,000 fatigue flight cycles to obtain type certification. The tests, which have begun two months ahead of schedule, are expected to last for 26 months.
