Smiths has delivered the first A380 mid fixed trailing edge (MFTE) wing component to Airbus. The firm's total work packages on the programme $100 million and will flow from aircraft deliveries forecast through to 2020.

Smiths also has responsibility for the manufacture of the A380 landing gear pintle, which attaches the main landing gear to the wing. The components are designed and manufactured at the firm's Southampton, UK, facility.

"Smiths builds on its solid reputation as a supplier to Airbus on the A340, manufacturing trailing edge components, and its unique capability to offer the best all-round solution for major structural components," said Dr John Ferrie, group managing director for Smiths Aerospace.

"This further develops the relationship between the two companies and we are now working with Airbus towards developing the next A380 derivative programme requirements, including the freighter version."

Technology

The A380 MFTE structural components interface with the inner and outer edges, rear spar and upper and lower panels to form a major part of the wing.

All components are designed using the latest computer technology and manufacturing techniques, and benefit from Smiths' continuing investment in extended facilities including thin-wall, high-speed machining and determinate assembly methods.
