Air Canada's Council of Unions has selected the former Premier of Saskatchewan Roy Romanow as its representative on the airline's board of directors.
The carrier's unions won the right to select a board member in June 2009 at the conclusion of cost-neutral collective bargaining agreements between management and labour. The unions also gained an equity stake in the company.
The Council of Unions is comprised of the Air Canada Pilots Association, the Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association, the Canadian Auto Workers, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Romanow served as Premier from 1991 to 2001, and is currently a senior fellow in public policy at the University of Saskatchewan and a director on the board of media company Torstar.
In a statement, the group of unions say Romanow has long promoted labour representation on corporate boards.
