The pilots' strike at Air France has cost the airline around Fr100 million ($17 million) a day since 2 June. The strike has crippled airline operations in the build-up to the 1998 World Cup, for which it is the official carrier.

On 5 June, the carrier was operating around 25% of its long range flights and 30% of domestic and European services, a small increase on the day before. Hopes of a resolution were rising by 5 June, but the two sides were maintaining a tough line as meetings continued as Flight International went to press.

The pilots object to a plan for a 15% salary reduction in return for a 10% stake in the airline as part of a plan to reduce salary costs by Fr500 million a year. They want to end the two-level salary system that penalises pilots employed since April 1997.
