Air India has postponed a decision on the acquisition of up to 24 long-range aircraft while it considers a revised offer from Airbus Industrie.

The national carrier was due to announce a decision following a board meeting in new Delhi on 23 January. The issue slipped off the agenda for the meeting, however, after the evaluation committee was reconvened by the airline to evaluate a revised price and technical offer from Airbus covering its A340-200/300 and 8000 variants.

The last-ditch bid was delivered in late December 1995, allegedly following a decision by the original evaluation committee to recommend purchase of the Boeing 777, rather than Airbus or McDonnell Douglas aircraft.
