Air India has again revived its requirement for a long-haul medium capacity aircraft type and is preparing to invite Airbus and Boeing to bid for the supply of 17 aircraft. The Indian flag-carrier says at least half of the aircraft must seat more than 250 passengers in three classes and be capable of flying from India to the USA non-stop. Though the airline is yet to release further details of its requirement, it is likely to choose between members of the A340 and 777 families. Air India is also interested in acquiring additional aircraft with more than 400 seats - a requirement that can be met by the 747-400 or 550-seat A380. A separate requirement for up to 20 short-haul 160-seat aircraft is also being finalised.
