Indian carrier nets Dutta

Former United Airlines president Rono Dutta has taken over as the head of fast-growing Indian carrier Air Sahara.

India-born Dutta replaces chief executive Uttam Kumar Bose, who has moved to another company within the group that owns Air Sahara. Dutta, who was president of United between 1999 and 2002, recently moved back to India from the USA. He started with Air Sahara early this year as an adviser assisting with the its plans to expand into the international market, including flights to Sri Lanka.

Dutta worked for United for 17 years and after leaving the airline did consulting work and sat on the board of US Airways. He left United after the carrier, which is restructuring under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, appointed Glenn Tilton as president.

Air Sahara is the third-largest domestic operator in India after Jet Airways and Indian Airlines. It operates Boeing 737s and Bombardier CRJ200s.
