Airbus is close to finalising its long awaited $4 billion order for up to 120 single aisle aircraft from a group of Latin American airlines, following the confirmation by TACA of El Salvador that an order is planned.

TACA says that it is finalising an order for 30 A319s, with deliveries of the first six aircraft set to begin during 1998. The TACA group of airlines has orders for 10 A320s (including five from Costa Rican subsidiary LACSA). The new aircraft will serve the USA.

LanChile revealed in January that it will order 20 A320 family aircraft, for delivery from late 2000, while TAM of Brazil is believed to be in negotiation for at least 30 A319s.
