AIRBUS INDUSTRIE HAS flown the first high gross-weight version of the four-engine A340-300. Delivery of the first of 17 aircraft ordered by Singapore Airlines (SIA) is due in April 1996.

Maximum take-off weight of the modified aircraft, termed the A340-300E by SIA, is increased to 271t from the basic aircraft's 257t. Changes to accommodate the extra 2,400litres of fuel carried in the centre and outer tanks (bringing the total capacity to 141,000litres), include local wing-reinforcement, and a re-twisted outer-wing section, to improve cruise efficiency.

The aircraft is powered by 150kN (34,000lb)-thrust CFM56-5C4s also used on the A340-200 and some -300s. Range is up from 11,500km (6,200nm) to 13,300km.
