Airbus is expected to announce orders for its aircraft today at the show.

Airbus chief executive Noel Forgeard yesterday hinted at orders, possibly in several categories of aircraft.

The most tantalising possibility is for a rumoured order for the A380 ultra-large transport from China Southern, which could introduce the aircraft in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Asked about the A380's prospects in China, Forgeard said that the Airbus 20-year forecast of some 16,000 new deliveries would see a demand for around 10% from China.

"Obviously one of the biggest markets in the world will take the biggest aircraft in the world. We are talking to several airlines [in China]. It will fly, perhaps as soon as the Olympics in 2008," he said.
