Lufthansa Technik has won the contract to fit out two ex-Lufthansa Airbus A340-300s for VIP transports to be operated by the Special Air Mission Wing of Germany’s ministry of defence.

Reported to be worth a total of Eur700 million, the deal covers procurement of the two aircraft, a major overhaul and installation of the VIP cabins, initial spares and ground equipment, and training of German Air Force pilots and technical staff.

In their new configuration they will be able to carry a maximum of 142 passengers non-stop over ranges up 13,000km. They will also be capable of medevac operations, transporting sick or injured patients.
