Cabin information and entertainment system manufacturer Airshow is aiming for certification of a broadband terminal that will enable in-flight delivery of internet, e-mail video conferencing and business communications on a Bombardier Challenger 604 in September.

The high-speed data initiative, which is designed for corporate aircraft and commercial airliners, is being developed in conjunction with digital wireless communications specialist Qualcomm. Services will be delivered over the Globalstar satellite system.

The alliance between Airshow and Qualcomm follows a similar partnership Qualcomm established last year with the Rockwell Collins/News Corp joint venture company In-Flight Network (IFN) to deliver high-speed data services to airliners. Rockwell Collins, however, recently decided to cease investment in IFN following its failure to secure customers.

The broadband terminal will use Qualcomm's code division multiple access technology to deliver up to 144kbit/s bi-directional data services, compared with the 9.6kbit/s speeds available via Inmarsat satellites. The higher data speeds will allow users to access company intranets, search the internet, send and receive e-mails, conduct video conferences and view news and information.

The terminal will be connected to Airshow's on-board cabin file server which will be programmed to deliver internet, e-mail, information and video services, and will be able to support eight simultaneous voice calls as well as data connectivity. The system includes a small antenna, weighing 1kg (2lb) and measuring 240mm x 130mmx 35mm.
