US regulators have approved new service by AirTran Airways from Atlanta and Orlando to Aruba as part of the carrier's push to launch three new Caribbean destinations.
In its application for approval to serve Aruba from Atlanta and Orlando, AirTran told regulators it aimed to launch daily roundtrip 737 service in each market starting 15 December.
On 25 August AirTran unveiled plans to seek the necessary authority to launch the Atlanta/Orlando-Aruba routings as well as new service from Atlanta, Baltimore and Orlando to Nassau, Bahamas and Montego Bay Jamaica.
AirTran exited Freeport, Bahamas in 2007, but later added Cancun, Mexico to its route network. The carrier has been studying several destinations in Canada and the Bahamas.
On 3 September AirTran posted proposed schedules for flights to Nassau and Montego Bay. The carrier plans to offer a single daily roundtrip flight from Atlanta, Baltimore and Orlando to Nassau. The Atlanta and Orlando service is being operated with Boeing 737s while 717s are being placed on the Baltimore-Nassau route.

The debut of AirTran's new Nassau service is scheduled for 17 December followed by the inauguration of flights to Montego Bay on 11 February.
