AirTran Airways will test the viability of service between Orlando, Florida and Missouri's privately-funded Branson airport starting on 19 December.

The airline will provide Saturday-only service using Boing 717-200 aircraft between the Florida leisure destination and the Ozark Mountains music resort.

"We are going to evaluate it in the spring to determine if it will be seasonal or a year-round destination," an airline spokeswoman says.

Orlando will mark the third destination that AirTran has trialled from the Branson airport, which officially opened on 11 May.

The low-cost carrier presently connects the facility from Atlanta using exclusive rights from the Branson airport, a practice prohibited at federally-funded airports.

AirTran previously linked Branson with Milwaukee, Wisconsin but dropped the city pair less than two months after inaugurating service to shift capacity to its Branson-Atlanta routing.
