DELTA Air Lines chairman, president and chief executive Ron Allen unexpectedly announced on 12 May that he will leave when his contract lapses on 31 July.

The move comes amid speculation that his untimely departure was fuelled by a rift between Allen and other members of Delta Air Lines' board of directors.

In disclosing his resignation plans, Allen implies that he is seeking new challenges. In a prepared statement, Allen says: "My personal goals during the past three years were to lead Delta Air Lines back to sustained profitability and position our company so that it is poised for growth- Delta has realised great progress in both these areas, and the company is in excellent condition."

Delta, the third-largest US airline, has not yet announced a long-term successor. Maurice Worth, executive vice-president for customer service, will serve as acting chief operating officer until Allen's replacement is named.

Board member Gerald Grinstein has organised a search committee for a successor. Allen says that he will work with the board to find a successor and serve as a consultant and advisor.
