AMERICANAIRLINES has placed orders exceeding $268 million for more than 70,000 new and upgraded passenger seats for its entire fleet.

The deal has been split between three seat suppliers: US manufacturers B/E Aerospace (BEA) and Weber Aircraft, and Germany's Recaro. Installation is to be completed by the year 2000.

BEA will supply more than 2,000 new business-class seats for all of American's Boeing 767s, as well as 777s on order, and will upgrade business-class seats on its McDonnell Douglas (MDC) DC-10s and MD-11s. BEA will also supply new first-class seats for American's Boeing 727s and MDC MD-80s, as well as 737s on order.

Recaro will supply tourist-class seats for the 727s, MD-80s and new 737s and 777s, for a total of 400 aircraft. Weber will supply first-class and tourist-class seats for 767s and 757s.
