AMERICAN AIRLINES (AA) and Japan Airlines have agreed "the industry's first significant air-cargo alliance", says the US carrier's cargo division.

Under the agreement, AA Cargo will act as a general sales agent for Japan Airlines in 14 states in the USA and 26 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. In turn, JAL will perform the same role for American in Japan, Thailand and, later, in other South- East Asian countries.

The joint agreement, which is effective from 1 September, may be expanded in the future to include sharing of systems, development of joint cargo products and new ground-handling agreements.
