American Airlines plans to launch its proposed flight between Chicago O'Hare and Sao Paulo Guarulhos on 20 November 2014, if it receives US-Brazil frequencies from the government that become available next year.
The Fort Worth-based Oneworld alliance member detailed its plans for its proposed flights between Sao Paulo and both Chicago and Los Angeles in a filing with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) on 24 April.
American is seeking seven of 14 unrestricted frequencies to Brazil that are available from this October, and seven of 14 that become available in October 2014 for the flights.
The once daily Los Angeles flight would be operated on a 247-seat Boeing 777-200 from 21 November if it receives the frequencies, according to the filing. The once-daily Chicago flight would also be flown on a 777-200.
American says that it would accept just seven frequencies for either the Chicago or Los Angeles flights from the DOT but would not operate either route with less than daily service.
Delta Air Lines and US Airways have also applied for the frequencies. Atlanta-based Delta has requested 14 unrestricted frequencies for second daily flights to Sao Paulo from both Atlanta and New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) airports this year, and seven frequencies to maintain its service between Detroit and Sao Paulo in 2014.
Tempe, Arizona-based US Airways has requested seven frequencies to continue its planned flight between Sao Paulo and Charlotte this year, and seven for new service between Philadelphia and Sao Paulo in 2014.
