American Airlines has launched inflight streaming video entertainment on its fleet of 15 Boeing 767-200 aircraft, and plans to offer the product on all of its Wi-Fi enabled aircraft later this year.

Called Entertainment On Demand and to be powered by Gogo, the new product will allow passengers to stream movies and TV shows from an inflight library to compatible Wi-Fi enabled laptops, said the Oneworld carrier.

Customers will be able to use tablets and other devices with the product in the coming months, said American's vice-president for marketing Rob Friedman.

The airline has rolled out Entertainment On Demand on two 767 services to begin with: New York JFK-Los Angeles and New York JFK-San Francisco. Introductory rates for the new product are at 99 cents a TV show and $3.99 for a movie.

American received Federal Aviation Administration certification this month for the inflight video system, after testing it on two 767-200s.

Pending further certifications, it will roll out the product on all of its Wi-Fi enabled aircraft later this year, said the carrier.

Gogo will also make the product available to more types of laptops and devices in the coming months, it added.
