American Airlines will expand its entertainment on demand product offering to about 400 WiFi-enabled aircraft by end-2012, after initially offering it on 15 Boeing 767-200s.
The Oneworld carrier will install the product, powered by Gogo, on more than 90 Boeing MD-80s by end-2011 and on additional MD-80s and Boeing 737-800s by end-2012.
American currently offers the product on flights operated with 15 767-200s, which are mostly used on transcontinental flights between New York and Los Angeles and New York and San Francisco.
The product allows passengers to stream content like movies and TV shows from an in-flight library to selected WiFi-enabled laptops for a fee.
"Initial customer feedback shows our entertainment on demand product is a hit with our customers, and we feel it's a great example of how we continue to deliver products our customers truly value," said Rob Friedman, American's VP for marketing.
