American Airlines will launch an in-flight trial of Remote Diagnostic Technologies' (RDT) Tempus 2000 medical monitoring and transmission device this summer.

The airline is the first to commit to an in-service trial of the product, which allows cabin crew to transmit to experts on the ground data from an onboard medical incident.

The company is supplying American with "a number of devices" for trial use on long haul aircraft.

The Tempus 2000 allows information on blood pressure, temperature, blood oxygen levels and pulse and respiration rates to be transmitted to a medical expert on the ground via Inmarsat satellites. The system has a 12-lead electrocardiogram, essential in differentiating between angina and a heart attack, says RDT.
