Air New Zealand (ANZ) is searching for a new chief executive following incumbent Ralph Norris's resignation to take up the same role at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Star Alliance carrier ANZ says in a statement that its board "respects Mr Norris's desire to take up the challenge of leading one of Australia's largest public companies, and wishes to place on record its appreciation of the major contribution he has made to the repositioning of the nation's airline."

Norris joined ANZ as chief executive in February 2002 and is credited with turning the formerly troubled airline around. He joined after the New Zealand government saved the carrier from collapse through a financial bailout that left the state with more than 80% ownership.

ANZ says Norris has a six-month notice provision in his contract although his departure date has yet to be determined. Before joining ANZ he worked in banking for more than 30 years and it had long been assumed that he would return to that industry at some point.
