The US Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has proposed that Chicago's downtown Meigs Field general aviation airfield be purchased by the city and reopened using funds from the Federal Aviation Administration's airport improvement programme (AIP). Meigs was bulldozed in a midnight raid ordered by Chicago major Richard Daly. The AIP would provide almost $37 million of the $41 million "fair market value" of the land, and give the city funds to improve existing parks, says AOPA, which argues Chicago cannot afford to turn Meigs into a park as Daly plans.
