The Boeing Apache AH-64D Longbow attack helicopter on display here at Asian Aerospace is one of three aircraft being redeployed by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), marking the first-ever full deployment of the aircraft in Asia.

The RSAF has reassigned three AH-64Ds from a training base in Arizona to one of its facilities in Singapore following three years of accident-free training in the USA, during which time the aircraft logged more than 8,000h of flight.

Singapore ordered 20 D model Apaches in 1999 and received the first eight aircraft in 2002. Deliveries of the final 12 Apaches began in January this year.

Boeing held a handover ceremony in Arizona to mark the aircraft handover last month, then the Apaches were flown by transport aircraft to Singapore.

“The return marks a significant milestone for the Republic of Singapore Air Force,” said Col Tan Wee Ngee, commander at the Sembawang airbase. “In the USA they have had very good training value. They were able to practise and train the proficiencies and competencies and test the components. Now we can look at the bigger scheme of things and fit them in with the other pieces to set the stage for a new era for our defence force.”

Boeing says it has been working closely with the RSAF to ensure that the programme exceeds requirements and that the air force has the resources to maintain and operate its aircraft in Singapore.

“The Singapore Apache programme continues to make great strides and achieve significant milestones,” says Tommy Filler, Boeing director of international Apache programmes. “Our overall success reflects outstanding teamwork and long-term commitments from everyone involved. We’re equally proud that the Republic of Singapore Air Force is the first of our international customers in Asia to field the Apache.”
