United Airlines has named John Tague, the former president of low-fare carrier ATA Airlines, to the new post of executive vice-president customer.

Hungarian flag carrier Malév has appointed water industry executive, Laszlo Sandor, to the joint role of chairman and chief executive. Sandor, who previously held both titles at Budapest Waterworks, replaces chief executive Jozsef Varadi and chairman Andras Huszty.

The Italian government is replacing Alitalia's chairman, Fausto Cereti, who is retiring, with the former chairman of Milan airport operator SEA, Giuseppe Bonomi.

Lufthansa executive Michael Kraus has become chairman and chief executive of Air Dolomiti. The German carrier recently took a controlling stake in the Italian regional. Kraus replace the airline's founder Alcide Leali, who will remain on the board.

Obituary

Robert "Bob" Baker, has died after a 35-year career at American Airlines and as a leading industry force for air traffic control modernisation. Baker, who was 58 when he succumbed to lung cancer after a long battle, started his career in air cargo but soon became a technology expert, helping move Sabre from the innards of AMR Corporation to its role as a leading global distribution system.
