Leisure group TUI has appointed former Sabena chief executive Christoph Muller as chairman of Hapag-Lloyd Flug, with the aim of making him head of the flight division at group level, a role previously filled by Kevin Hatton, who retired earlier this year from running TUI’s UK tour arm Thomsonfly. Muller will have a seat on the board.

“With this move we want to emphasise the significant strategic importance of our seven airlines in Europe and have reflected this in the group’s management structure,” says Dr Michael Frenzl, chairman of the TUI board.

Muller had a relatively brief stint as head of Sabena, taking the helm in 2000, shortly before the Belgian flag carrier’s parent SAirGroup hit financial problems that led to the group going into liquidation.

Muller, 44, is a German national and graduate of Harvard University.
