AlliedSignal has begun tests of the 131-9(B) auxiliary power unit (APU) - destined for the Boeing 737-600/700 and 800 family - a month ahead of schedule. The APU is derived from the 131-9(D) about to enter service in the McDonnell Douglas MD-90, but differs in having a starter converter instead of a conventional starter motor. AlliedSignal's Boeing programmes director, Jim Wojciehowski, says: "You get more starting power out of it, plus there are weight and cost savings." The first APU is due to be delivered to Boeing in July 1996.
