Armenia has begun the changeover from its former Soviet Union airspace management system with the implementation of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) vertical separation standards.

The move, completed this month, comes as a new Thomson Airsys Eurocat 1000 air traffic management system enters operation, opening the way for increased airspace capacity in the region for aircraft bound from Europe to the near-east and Asia.

Eduard Pilossian, head of the airspace management department of the Armenian general department of civil aviation, says Armenia handles around 50 overflights a day. "Demand is not that high, but we expect it to grow," he says. "We've seen a 40% increase in overflights in 1999," he adds.
