The Olympic Games are expected to increase passenger throughput at Athens International Airport in August by 33% and aircraft movements by 17% compared with the same month last year, says the airport. But it claims to be fully prepared for the 2 million passengers, which will include 15,500 athletes and officials, 2,500 VIPs and more than 50 heads of state.

The airport has an express terminal for processing the athletes quickly, where they can also complete accreditation and check in to the Olympic village. The Greek police service is in charge of special security arrangements for the athletes, VIPs and ordinary passengers. Active security systems include 100% aircraft hold luggage screening, as well as airport access control.

Also expected are 35,600 sponsors and 21,400 media representatives, says the airport. The new airport's rail station is complete, providing a link to the city.
