While LCD monitors have helped to reduce the weight and volume of aircraft displays, they do have their weaknesses. To view screens that go a long way towards overcoming these drawbacks, call in on US company Atlantech .

Maryland-based Atlantech makes avionics screens that produce a bright, colour-accurate image even when viewed in sunlight and from angles exceeding 80 off-centre.

"Colour fidelity can be of vital importance in avionics displays," comments Atlantech president Nathan Bellin. "With conventional screens, head movement in relation to the centrepoint can cause brown to appear black and red to look pink, with obvious implications for safety."

Based on new field-fringe switching technology, the screens incorporate a liquid capable of producing an image at up to 103C. When heated by backlighting and sunlight, conventional liquids become ineffective at much lower temperatures.
