Atlas Air took a charge of nearly $17 million in the second quarter, ending 30 June. The charge relates to the US cargo carrier's decision to return five leased Boeing 747-200s to FedEx early in 1998 because of their "operational limitations, unreliability and continuing high costs". The company also disclosed a one-time $17 million gain in the financial period related to refinancing of $235 million of debt.
