Martin Marietta Commercial Launch Services launched its second Atlas booster in 18 days from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on 28 January, carrying the US Navy's Ultra High Frequency, UHF F4 communications satellite. It was the sixth launch of an Atlas 2 model. Hughes has a $1.7 billion contract to build ten UHF satellites. The UHF F4 is the first in the series to include an extremely high-frequency communications payload.
