The Australian Department of Defence has ordered a further batch of AN/AAR-60 missile launch detection systems (MILDS) from EADS Defence Electronics, the company announced at the show. The order is valued at “more than €10 million [$11.9 million]”.
The passive imaging sensors, which detect and track the UV emissions of approaching missiles, will be integrated into the self-protection suites of Australian Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawks and Boeing CH-47 Chinooks under Project Echidna. Standalone MILDS systems are also being supplied to upgrade Royal Australian Air Force’s Lockheed Martin AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
MILDS is already in Australian service on the Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopter and will be deployed on the NH Industries MRH90 tactical helicopter
