The Royal Australian Navy is to acquire Israel Military Industries ADM-141 tactical air launched decoys (TALD) for use as an interim low-cost aerial target to support air defence training requirements. A formal project – designated Sea 1855 – was set up late last year within the Australian Defence Material Organisation to oversee the deal, which is expected to be conducted via the US foreign military sales system. Safety and suitability studies for TALD integration aboard RAAF Boeing F/A-18A/Bs and Lockheed Martin AP-3Cs were carried out in early 2002.
