The Australian government has made the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) more accountable to industry and government following industry protests over enforcement practices and policies.
The reforms, to take effect from July, will force CASA to consult industry more extensively before it makes decisions. Reforms include abolition of CASA's board; powers allowing the transport minister to set policy directions and performance standards for CASA; introducing a delay before CASA's suspension and cancellation decisions become effective; and establishing an air standards advisory body to enforce effective aviation industry communication.
